Project Hail Mary is a different kind of Sci-Fi novel

Project Hail Mary - A Review

by Linden Jad Peters

Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi novel by Andy Weir, author of The Martian. It is set in the near future in the presence of a solar dimming event, with a mysterious bright line created from Venus to the sun. In order to stop global famine and freezing caused by the dimming of the sun's light, the world's space organizations work together to provide a solution. Ryland Grace, the protagonist of this book, discovers an alien life form in a sample collected from Venus. This life form is a single celled organism which Grace names "Astrophage" (Meaning "Star Eater") for its tendency to consume extremely high amounts of energy from stars. Many stars have already fallen victim to Astrophage...except Tau Ceti. This star has mysteriously resisted Astrophage infection. In order to stop the impending apocalypse on earth, the space organizations decide on a plan called "Project Hail Mary," a one way trip to Tau Ceti to observe what is resisting the Astrophage in that solar system. Grace finds himself unwillingly onboard this mission, and has the sole responsibility of saving the planet.

Although I don't usually read books of the Sci-Fi Genre, I really enjoyed reading this book. The story is very engaging, and I never got bored during all of its 476 pages (Which I cannot say about a lot of shorter books). It expels the stereotypes of science fiction by maintaining an actually realistic scenario and idea of extraterrestrial life, as well focusing on creating heroes that you grow to love instead of villains to hate. Overall, I think Project Hail Mary is a 10/10 book.

  1. This was one of my favourite books that I have ever read, I loved all of the technical parts and I feel that the ending is satisfying.
